Trail Overview

The Western Mountain Road Trail is one of the few dirt roads in the Acadia National Park where you can escape the crowds. The trail starts at the Seal Cove Road and takes you to several trailheads and the Seal Cove Pond. The trail is a gravel forestry road with some soft sand spots that can turn into mud holes after heavy rain. The road is not always wide enough for two vehicles to pass. 4WD and High-Clearance are recommended, especially during Winter. All vehicles must be street legal. Acadia National Park protects the natural beauty of the highest rocky headlands along the Atlantic coastline in Maine, an abundance of habitats, and a rich cultural heritage. With 4 million annual visits, it's one of the top 10 most-visited national parks in the United States. Visitors enjoy 27 miles of historic motor roads, 158 miles of hiking trails, and 45 miles of carriage roads. An America the Beautiful or Seasonal Day Pass is required to enter the park.

Pretty standard trail, nothing spectacular, but fun to drive if you’re in the area.

It’s an extension of the park. My guess is they used to be a part of the carriage road system now used to access lesser known hikes around this part of the island.
