Trail Overview

This trail to Greenwood Pond starts at the Katahdin Iron Works Historic Site which is also the Ki-Jo Mary check-in point for the Northern Maine Woods. The trail is all dirt roads typically wide enough for 2 vehicles to pass, but roughly 2/3rds of the way the trail becomes a bit narrower and in some cases just wide enough for 1 vehicle. There are a couple of wooden bridge crossings on the way up and at the very end, you can drive through a small waterway (less than a foot deep during our trip) to get a bit closer to the actual Pond. Once you get to the end there is about a 200-meter walk to the pond itself. The trail takes about an hour each way and there are a couple of nice open vistas along the way. In the end, there were a couple of abandoned boats at the water's edge that one might use for fishing.

Difficulty

The majority of the trail is passable by almost any 2wd vehicle, but the water crossing at the end requires a little more clearance.

Lots of tree encroachment at times, the little pond at end of trail is worth visiting.

Trail narrows to single width about 2/3 in. Overgrown in places but manageable. I managed the vast majority of the trip in 2WD. Just a couple spots close to the pond required 4WD. The view of the pond is worth the trip. Also at the 2/3 point, there is an open gate with a sign saying “no motorized vehicles.” I later learned from the gentleman manning the check point that the timber company that owns the land beyond the gate doesn’t want vehicles up there at all. Possible the gate could be locked without warning. If so, Gulf Hagas and/or Gauntlet Falls are nearby, with easier access.
