Trail Overview
Nestled within Winterset City Park, Clark Tower Trail offers visitors a surprising escape into nature that feels far removed from city life. As the journey begins, travelers are greeted by the historic Cutler-Donahoe Bridge, one of the area's oldest covered bridges. Originally constructed in 1871 by Eli Cox to span the North River, the 82-foot bridge was relocated to its current location in 1970 as part of the first Covered Bridge Festival.
The trail follows a winding gravel roadway that crosses several small bridges and meanders through a peaceful wooded landscape. At the heart of the route stands the Clark Memorial Tower, a unique stone structure built in 1926 by the Clark family that resembles a castle rising from the forest. Accessible by vehicle, bicycle, or foot, the trail is a favorite destination for sightseeing, hiking, biking, and picnicking. With its scenic surroundings and historic landmarks, Clark Tower Trail provides a tranquil outdoor experience that feels worlds away from civilization while remaining just minutes from town.
