Trail Overview

This out-and-back trail starts near Prospect Peak and takes you through timber and brush on several different surfaces on what is almost a total climb up to the top of Gold Hill. The trail begins in fairly smooth dirt with a nice banked S-turn on the first climb before shortly leveling out for a ways. The first 2 miles or so is pretty easy before the difficulty steps up a little. After the intersection with Trail 763, you start to hit some pretty steep climbs that will get very rocky in places. There are short sections of smoother gravel to give you some time to breathe between the rougher sections. The final climb is another steep and rocky one that will take you to the summit of Gold Hill.

Difficulty

This trail does get very steep in places, the steepest portions are also very rocky and there are some decent roots and sticks/debris in the trail.

History

The trail is named for the historical "Lost Wheelbarrow Mine" that was near where the trail meets trail 763. The story of the Wheelbarrow Mine is an interesting one and worth reading about! There are also some remnants of an old car that was abandoned a long time ago when these trails were "roads".
