Trail Overview

Trout Creek or FR 634 is a moderately used route into the Selkirk Mountains of Boundary County, Idaho. Portions of the route enter the presence of a 2022 fire and may block the roadway. The first half of the route has a significant grade of 7 to 8 percent, narrow, with steep ledges. The creek is beautiful, but rarely visible through the trees. The route accesses trailheads for Ball Lakes, Pyramid Lake, the Pacific Northwest Trail, Trout Lake, Big Fisher Lake, and the abandoned Russell Mountain Fire Lookout. The upper section of the road is very picturesque and has deer, elk, and grizzly bears in the vicinity. Bear awareness is required, do not leave food in your vehicle. There is one vault toilet at the end of the route, and camping areas reserved for stockade users. Dispersed campsites are also present along the roadway. Inclement weather brings additional difficulty, snow can occur in all but the warmest months.
