Trail Overview

The Robinson Mine Trail is a scenic and historic backcountry route that provides access to some of the most impressive mining relics on Caribou Mountain in the Caribou National Forest. Following a remote dirt road through the heart of the mountain’s historic mining district, the trail offers a moderate off-road adventure combined with an outstanding opportunity to explore Idaho’s rich mining heritage. Under normal dry conditions, the trail is rated a 5 out of 10, though snow, rain, and muddy conditions can quickly increase the challenge and may require more capable vehicles and experienced drivers. The route passes two historic mine sites, each offering a unique glimpse into the area’s mining past. Along the trail, visitors can explore a historic placer mining operation featuring a large trommel and sluice system used to process material in search of valuable minerals. These well-preserved remnants help tell the story of the miners who worked the rugged terrain of Caribou Mountain in pursuit of gold and other precious metals. At the end of the road lies the Robinson Mine, a historic producer of gold, silver, and lead. The site contains numerous mining relics, including a large steam boiler that stands as a reminder of the equipment required to operate in this remote mountain environment. The mine and its remaining infrastructure provide a fascinating look into the industrial history of southeastern Idaho and the determination of the miners who worked these high-elevation deposits. The trail itself is highly scenic, winding through dense forests, mountain meadows, and rugged terrain with excellent views of the surrounding Caribou Mountain region. Drivers should expect occasional water crossings, rutted sections, and changing trail conditions throughout the season. Because the route is remote and fallen trees are common, carrying a chainsaw is recommended to help clear obstacles and keep the trail passable. Visitors are encouraged to explore the nearby network of historic mines and connecting trails, making the Robinson Mine Trail an excellent starting point for discovering the rich mining history and beautiful backcountry landscapes of Caribou Mountain
