Trail Overview
Mule Creek (FS 7198) is a standout 9.8-mile trail in the Sawtooth National Forest, about an hour north of Ketchum, Idaho. Starting from the parking lot off FS 70215, it runs south to meet the West Fork Big Smoky trail. The route climbs about 2,000 feet to its midpoint before descending 2,500 feet into the junction. The track is mostly hard-packed dirt with very few rocks, and obstacles are limited to small stream crossings and a few broad switchbacks. The ride begins in an open valley alongside the Salmon River with scenic views before dipping into wooded sections filled with flowing turns and a couple of Forest Service bridge crossings. Higher up, the trail climbs through switchbacks to ridgelines that open to dramatic mountain views. The descent is fast and fun, with only one mild rock garden near a hairpin turn. Known for its flow and views, Mule Creek is considered one of the best trails in the Sawtooths.
