Trail Overview

Lower Sugarloaf is one of the first trails accessed from the staging area for the South Hills trail system, and will likely be taken to access other trails in the system. It starts from the staging area in flat sage brush desert terrain, and lightly snakes through the brush. There are some big rocks in the trail, but not many curves as the trail is relatively straight and flat in the beginning. Then it starts to leave the flat lands and get into more hilly terrain with some cool rocky ravines on the side of the trail. The trail parallels the ravines and traverses across the hillsides, without actually dipping into the ravines. Watch out for washed out sections as the trail gets close to the rim of the ravines. It goes through another section with flat rock slabs and some bigger rocks to get over, but all are easy obstacles. The trail is signed well at every intersection. The trail ends at the intersection with Upper Sugarloaf, which will take you near the top of Sugarloaf Mountain around 5,400 feet elevation. The trail has several road crossings that you need to watch out for.
