Trail Overview

The road to Lake Mountain in Idaho is well traveled and in good condition. It can be accessed by any 4WD vehicle. It starts on Williams Creek Road, a few miles south of Salmon, ID. At the Williams Creek summit, turn south on Ridge Road. Take the offshoot to Lake Mountain, which will take you to the summit. The summit of Lake Mountain will give you spectacular views in all directions. To the North, you can see the town of Salmon and the Beaverhead/Bitterroot mountains, to the East Williams Lake, and to the West in the distance, the Bighorn Crags (part of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness). Also on the summit is an FAA radio tower for airplane guidance. Once you've taken in the views, you can go back down to the ridge road and travel another 1/2 mile South and see what is called the Chinese graves. It's a remote gravesite of three Chinese miners from the early days who were killed for their gold dust. After this, you could continue to explore the surrounding roads or go back down to Williams Creek road the same way you came.

The trail had a lot of blown down trees, especially on the ridge. The trail is now cleared and passable. Starting from the north side, the trail has had a LOT of mining or lumber work and is now very wide and well maintained. Once it splits and heads due south, the trail turns back into a 2 track trail and is more interesting and fun. Experienced everything today; rain, snow, sunshine and fierce wind.
