Trail Overview

Kirkham Ridge Trail (FS 144) begins at Highway 21, approximately 4.9 miles East of Lowman, Idaho. There is a large area to unload and load ATVs, motorcycles, and horses just past the turn to Kirkham Hot Springs Day Use Area. The trailhead is across from the staging area. This trail is open to ATVs, motorcycles, horses, and hikers only. No full-size vehicles or Side-by-Sides are allowed. It is open from April 14th to September 30th. It closes to ALL motorized vehicles from October 1st through April 14th. The sign in the parking area states that the trail is closed to motorized vehicles starting August 30th. The last day for motorized vehicles is September 30th. The trail's base is primarily dirt and sand. It starts out fairly smooth and gradually gets rockier, rockier, and more rutted. When entering the trailhead at Highway 21, the trail begins climbing and winds through areas of tall grass and brush. There are great views of the valley as you navigate the winding trail through the mountains. As the trail climbs, the terrain changes between more open areas with shrubs and grass to areas with pine trees. The trail winds through forested areas, reaching a clearing on a saddle with great views of valleys on both sides. The trail then drops back down from the saddle into more pine trees. Be prepared with a chainsaw, as the trail can have fallen trees across it. There are some sections with larger boulders to navigate. There is a small creek with a bridge to cross it. When riding the entire trail from Highway 21, plan 4-5 hours, depending on the speed and how many views you stop to take in. Heavy rainstorms can close the trail. Contact the Lowman Ranger Station (208-259-3361) to confirm the trail is open. This trail is located in the Boise National Forest.

Difficulty

The trail is narrow. There's a potential for rockslides and trees across the trail, especially after heavy rain or windstorms. Some areas have vegetation on both sides, making the trail difficult to navigate. Long-sleeved shirts and pants are highly recommended for this reason. Also watch for low-hanging branches. There is one water crossing with a wooden bridge. There could be the potential for other water to cross on the trail earlier in the year with spring snow-melt or after heavy rainstorms.
