Trail Overview
Johnson/Lakeview Rd. #278 is an excellent scenic drive for beginner to intermediate offroaders looking to explore the beautiful Chilco Mountains and enjoy sweeping views of Lake Pend Oreille. Spanning approximately 14.9 miles, this dirt route offers a relatively easy yet engaging traverse starting near East Bunco Road on the west and winding its way northeast through dense timber and mountain ridges. The trail features an average technical rating of 3, characterized primarily by dirt terrain with small ruts, though drivers should be prepared for occasional deeper ruts that may require a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle. As you climb from a starting elevation of around 2,621 feet to a peak of 4,513 feet, the route treats travelers to gorgeous overlooks, particularly near Bernard Peak and Prospect Peak, before descending towards the lakeside.
The route is spacious enough to accommodate full-size vehicles, though the numerous narrow off-shoot trails branching from the main road are best suited for ATVs, UTVs, or dirt bikes looking for tighter, more technical challenges. Snow can linger on these mountain passes late into the spring, making late summer and early autumn the prime seasons for a visit when the road is dry and clear. Along the drive, you will cross paths with other scenic corridors like Forest Service Road 332, offering ample opportunity to extend your adventure into the surrounding Coeur d'Alene National Forest. Whether you are seeking a relaxed day-trip drive with stunning Idaho mountain backdrops or using it as a gateway to more rugged singletrack trails, this route delivers a classic Pacific Northwest overlanding experience.
