Trail Overview

BLM 3780 - Star Valley Ranch is an isolated 15-mile overland route ideal for high-desert explorers and adventurers seeking absolute solitude in the Owyhee River Wilderness. Starting near the intersection of the Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada borders, this scenic track winds through Star Valley between 4,733 and 5,310 feet in elevation. The trail is rated a 2 on the difficulty scale, characterized by easy dirt and rock surfaces suitable for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs. Along the journey, the route follows the upper reaches of the Little Owyhee River and passes through Star Valley Ranch, managed by the 45 Ranch, with views of Star Valley Knoll. Due to the extreme isolation of this region, traveling here requires self-sufficiency, meaning you must bring extra fuel, water, and spare tires. A unique challenge of the local terrain is the dirt's high silica content; when dry, it produces an extremely fine talc dust that penetrates vehicle cabins, while wet weather turns the path into a slick, sticky mud that hardens like concrete. It is highly recommended to avoid this route during wet periods to prevent getting stranded. The trail features approximately 817 feet of elevation gain, making it a straightforward but highly remote excursion into a beautiful corner of the wilderness.
