Trail Overview

Alturas Lake–Mattingly (FS 7034) is a 5.1-mile trail in the Sawtooth National Forest, about an hour north of Ketchum, Idaho. It begins at a parking area on FS 70205 near Alturas Lake and travels west to meet the Johnson Creek trail. The route climbs roughly 1,100 feet, staying gradual for most of its length before finishing with a steeper push and several switchbacks. The route is hard-packed dirt with sections of medium embedded rock. Obstacles are limited—expect some roots, shallow creek crossings, and wider switchbacks toward the upper end. The trail starts in a popular hiking area, crossing bridges and weaving through dense forest before opening into sage fields as elevation increases. Near the top, it passes through a burn area with broader views before reaching the next junction. Overall, it’s a mellow climb with a short punch at the end and steady scenery throughout.
