Trail Overview

"Swamp Thing" is a route in the central part of the Osceola National Forest. It starts out as hard-packed dirt and limestone that almost any vehicle should be able to handle without issue. The trail winds through the forest, gradually becoming wetter and muddier, before eventually entering Big Gum Swamp. At this point, the mud holes and water pits become frequent and depending on rainfall, very deep. Eventually, the trail will become a long stretch of nearly constant water pits, before gradually transitioning back to dirt, with only occasional mud and water. Drivers should exercise common sense and caution if driving solo, and stick to the outside of the larger pits. Cell service is spotty the further you travel into the forest.

Difficulty

Water pits can be deceptively deep in the center. Lower clearance and solo vehicles should stick to the outside of the water pits.

Trail was dry and easily accessible. Very few mud puddles do to dry conditions but the one found where deep and fun. Lots of turkeys along the trail.

Took a left onto Middle Prong from 235 and went southwest towards 233. Easy, dry conditions that any car could do.

The trail is for the most part sand/dirt. I’m assuming from the rain last week, the water crossings were pretty deep. And difficult to base the depth. At one point the water was easily over 3 feet, but only for a very short distance. Other than those water crossings (there are a few), the trail is very nice, easy, and relatively smooth. Saw a couple gators too.

It rained all day the day before we got there so all the water spots were full my truck is a 1995 gmc k1500 6in lift and 37in tires some of the water holes were over my hood. Other than scaring the poop out of me because I don’t have a snorkel was able to make everything with no issues will definitely be coming back
