Trail Overview

Nero Road - Tate's Hell State ForestNero Road is a long, sandy straightaway that stretches deep into the wild heart of Tate's Hell State Forest in Florida. This remote route winds through dense pine flatwoods and tangled swamp bramble, giving it an otherworldly feel that lives up to the forest's eerie name. Along the way, don't be surprised to see wildlife--alligators have been spotted crossing the road. The trail ends at a peaceful campsite and boat launch tucked beside a quiet waterway, complete with a picnic table and shaded clearing. This is an ideal spot for fishing, camping, and experiencing untamed Florida.

History

The story of Tate's Hell, a Florida swamp and state forest, centers around the legend of Cebe Tate, a farmer who, in the 1870s, ventured into the swamp to hunt a panther and became lost for seven days, eventually emerging near Carrabelle, saying "My name is Cebe Tate, and I just came from Hell" before dying.
