Trail Overview

Lochloosa Wildlife Conservation Area Trail is a 4 mile trail through the Northwest portion of Lochloosa Wildlife Conservation Area. The trail is predominantly made of packed sand with a few small sections of loose sand. There are numerous water crossings that have water in them all the time with run off from the marsh surrounding the area and will be deep during and following rain. The trail is wide enough for full size vehicles and does not require 4WD, but high clearance is recommended during and after periods of heavy rain. Lochloosa Wildlife Conservation Area features numerous trails and a large lake for recreational enjoyment.Be aware that due to state rules, OHV's are not permitted in this area.

Difficulty

The trail is relatively easy with the only moderate features being water crossings. During periods of heavy rain, water crossings will be much deeper, but still fall under 1 foot.

Trail was wet but passable most mud spots were rock bottomed some were deep but had a solid bottom. Easy trail if you are a solo rider.

Trail was mostly flat the body of water by the bridge can usually be passed but i wasn’t driving with anyone else and was unsure how deep water was in case I needed recovery

Mostly dry and clear, with a couple of muddy holes with gravel bottoms. A good beginner trail.

Trail was fully open with two water crossings. Both were about 10-15 ft across and maybe 6-12in deep if that. Both were gravel bottomed and didn’t need 4 wheel drive but did just to be sure. Rest of the trail was mostly sugar sand and pretty dry so could easily get stuck if accelerating too quickly but otherwise nice and easy ride for stock jeep.

There are several water crossings on the trail. One is fairly easy with a packed gravel bottom and only 20' across, some others are soft mud bottom water crossings, with indiscernible depth and 30' to 40' across.

Majority of the trail is packed sand with interspersed gravel. At the time of riding there were two water crossings, and several smaller mud puddles on the trail. The first water crossing was near 10 inches deep with a sand/gravel bottom and 15 feet across. The second crossing was indiscernible depth with a mud bottom and approximately 40 feet across. We chose not to attempt the second crossing and turned around at that point.
