Trail Overview

Green Swamp Road is located in Lake County, and a short drive from Lakeland, Clermont, and several major theme park areas. This road cuts through ranching areas, farm lands, and active aggregate mining areas. This is a county-owned and maintained roadway. The northern end, near residential properties, and the southern end, serving the mining areas, are paved. There are no fees or permits required. Once the pavement ends, the trail turns into a compact red clay/sand road. The trail is uneven, rutted, and can have standing water less than 12 inches. There are numerous blind switchbacks and curves. The road traverses gentle rolling hills as it crosses through very scenic landscapes. This trail travels through longleaf pine sandhills, upland hardwoods, herbaceous wetlands, pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, and mining lakes. During and following rains, the clay road may become sticky/slick mud and might be difficult for low-clearance 2WD vehicles, especially going uphill. When weather conditions are dry, there are some select naturally wet areas that are rutted with moderately deep sticky mud. Those can be bypassed by using the center of the roadway, but if encountering a second vehicle, they cannot be bypassed. The road has minor rutting, and a few of the switchback areas have minor off-camber banking areas at points of curvature. This being a public right of way, access is granted year-round with no hour restrictions. All registered and licensed street-legal vehicles may access this road. Before operating other types of off-road/utility vehicles on this road, check with local and state government agencies regarding any ordinances or statutes that may prevent the operation of such vehicles.

Difficulty

The trail is uneven, rutted, and can have standing water less than 12 inches deep. Trail width varies; it is mostly two vehicle wide, but has many narrower sections that are just slightly single vehicle wide. The areas with shoulders are actually 12 to 18 inches above the roadway; therefore, a low clearance vehicle would not be able to pull over to allow passage of another vehicle.
