Trail Overview

This trail is a scenic ridgeline access road exceeding 4,000 feet, that traverses the Santa Ynez Mountain Range, one of the few east to west-oriented mountain ranges in the country, and offers amazing views of the Channel Islands, Goleta and the Santa Ynez Valley including Cachuma Lake. The trail can be accessed from the East (Hwy 154) or the West (Refugio Rd). This trail is seasonal with closures expected after rain. A majority of this trail is along very steep mountain ridges. Expect boulders and large rocks to navigate.

Difficulty

Accessing this trail from the East (Hwy 154) will offer an easy trail that can be navigated by SUVs and some 2WD vehicles. After mile marker five, the trail changes drastically, and depending on the maintenance of the trail, could be impassible. Turning around on the west half of this trail is very difficult with few pullouts.

History

This trail is used primarily by forest service communication contractors to access the many antenna dishes along the route, and county fire to maintain fire brakes. There is an old camping spot at the five-mile mark that makes a great location for having lunch and getting off the trail for some shade during the hot weather.

Beginning from East to West (154 to W Camino Cielo) is pretty easy going with incline majority of the way. Towards the west end, near the radio towers, you start to get rougher small patches of terrain/ rocks to tackle. Nothing too crazy but some high clearance would be beneficial. I drive a 2WD and had 0 issues on this trail.

The trail was a bit dry and had lots of dust as it was very dry. Drove most of the trail on 2-wheel drive. There are a few spots where I did use 4x4 low. Some people have said you can do this trail in a 2-wheel-drive vehicle, but I would not recommend it; you may struggle or get stuck. Do take it easy when driving the trail and do pay attention for other drivers and Dirt bikes. Everyone I ran into had very good trail etiquette, and we were courteous and yielded to each other. It's a fun, mellow trail, but be careful. and try to go with other people.

Lots of nice views, Main trail is great with many offshoots, Be cautious on some of the offshoots as they can be pretty sketchy with a nice drop. Some dirt bikes here and there so be careful on the blind turns. Camino Cielo because each climb on the offshoots takes you in a direct climb to the clouds. Great one night overland spot if youre passing by.

Did the fist 5 miles of the west side of the trail. It was pretty easy the bronco sport did good on the trail. Lots of different offshoots you can play on. For the most part stuck to the main trail and it was smooth riding. I recommend this trail stunning views and lots of fun.

no issues, just slow and steady and the GX550 OT+ handled it.

Easy trail unless you decide to challenge yourself on the offshoot trails that come back and loop around to the trail. Most of those are accurate 5/10 difficulty, def want 4x4, clearance, and lockers don't hurt, and that's just for the offshoot challenges. In dry conditions you don't need 4x4, but strongly suggest you have a good set of tires with thicker sidewall, there's some sharp rocks carry a full spare.

Group of 4 of us mobbed up here for the first time. Loved this trail. Some fun puddles from the recent rain. Was very cool having the option to either challenge yourself on the offshoots or skip em. Incredible views.

Loose rock & gravel, off-trails have thick silty dirt hard to gain traction so air down before hand.
