Trail Overview

Right off the 10 Freeway just South of Joshua Tree National Park is the Red Canyon Jeep Trail. A 13-mile trail that winds its way through the mountains into the Bradshaw Trail. The trail is very easy going with only a few sections where you will want to assess the section if you are new to off-roading. Otherwise, with ample experience you will enjoy the very minor challenges. The trail is filled with plenty of areas to camp and offers beautiful desert views of the canyons and mountain ranges.

NOT Red Canyon Trail, this parallels the canyon along the ridge in the lower section. Having 2 trails with essentially the same name is very confusing and made for a completely different experience.

Always a fun trail, washboards are there, as always. No noticeable issues from the recent rain. Desert was very green.

Trail was super cool. Had to get out and assess a couple spots but nothing that our tacomas couldn’t handle. The washboard part by the 10 was hell. 4mph and getting tossed around lol

Entered just off the 10. Saying this is washboard is an understatement. It was rough, had to turn back after 1 hour at 5mph max, it was just too rough for my family.

We took Red Canyon Jeep Trail from Hwy 10 in the SouthEast direction until it intersects with Bradshaw's trail. This is a fairly tame and fun trail with some modest ups and downs and a few scenic views. It's tempting to take the trail fast to smooth out the washboard sections. However there are a lot speed bumps and dips so you have to keep your speed under control.

Entering from Chiriaco Summit, very wash board. The wash boards are staggered, so Jeepers, keep you swaybar connected for fun, disconnect for an amusement ride. Eventually it "smooths" out. Now you can disconnect those annoying swaybars. Super fun trail! Great views everywhere!!!

Started from Salton Sea along by the canal and the summit road. Easy and 15-25 mph at some portion of the road. Plenty of other branches of unmarked trails if you are adventurous. Then took the red canyon jeep trail which is generally easy but a few turns and corners with caution. Ended the trip at Chiriaco summit. It was about 40 miles so please take time. My Jeep is a bone stock but made it work smoothly. There was zero soul/vehicle for entire trip.

The road was extremely rough with long sections of uneven washboards. I topped out at about 6-7 mph. There are a few tough maneuvers but other than the washboards, the road was pretty easy to navigate. I have a full size pickup truck with side steps. If you are able to, i recommend removing the steps. That is the only thing that touched the ground. I did not air down my tires. I’m pretty new to this type of driving so, i can’t say if that would have helped anything or not. I do understand that you get better traction with them aired down. That would have been helpful. I drive in 4H the entire time, I think that was a good call. There is a part of the trail that goes into a small canyon and it has a steep exit. I put it in 4L for this portion. We saw two UAV’s fly from north to south. Other than that, there wasn’t a soul out there as far as we could tell. It was a fun trail.

SxS's have rutted this trail bad, so without your swaybay disconnected and tires at 15psi your teeth will rattle loose. Great scenery but another trail where SxS's and their tiny tires and drivers FLOORING IT everywhere have made the trail annoying.

Great trail, wider vehicles can pass without issues. Great views, overall doable for novice 4x4 drivers.
