Trail Overview
Spanish Route is a challenging and scenic off-road trail situated in the Sierra National Forest near Wishon Reservoir, perfect for experienced drivers looking to test their vehicle's articulation and clearance. Spanning approximately 5 miles, this point-to-point route climbs from an elevation of 6,652 feet up to a peak of 9,123 feet, offering a rigorous ascent with over 2,550 feet of cumulative elevation gain. The trail features tight clearances, steep gradients, and a heavily forested environment where drivers must navigate around large tree roots and frequent downed timber. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles are highly recommended, as the rocky, uneven surface poses a significant risk of undercarriage damage to stock SUVs without aggressive modifications.
While there are no massive, impassable obstacles, the constant technical maneuvering makes this a slow, demanding drive that requires spotters in several tight spots. The route is best tackled during the late spring through early autumn months, when the Sierra Nevada snowpack has cleared and the dirt and rock surfaces are dry. Accessing the trailhead involves traveling from Shaver Lake along Dinkey Creek Road and McKinley Grove Road, crossing the Wishon Reservoir Dam, and following Forest Service Road 11S07.

Difficult: No major obstacles but trail is tight, steep and rocky in places. Lots of downed trees and big tree roots. Aggressive stock SUVs can do it, but damage is likely.
