Trail Overview

This is a 43-mile-long trek through dirt logging roads with spectacular views of the northern California redwoods. It is a great way to start a trip up the Mendocino coastline and on your way to Usal Road (an overlanding favorite in northern California). The route starts on the Willits main street and ends at Fort Bragg's coast. The majority of the route is dirt via Sherwood Road. Note that locals tend to dump cars on the route and engage in other illegal activities. It's best to travel in a group and not plan on spending much time in one place along the route. That said, you won't regret taking the extra time it takes to head to the coast via dirt instead of taking HWY 20 to the south.

Easily accessible. Me on a 110 dirtbike and my kid on a 125 cc dirtbike. Started out (from south side) as a road for cars then became more of a dirt bike trail. Was fun.

Was coming down from crescent city and wanted to try this trail on the way back down so I gave it a shot! Pretty easy tbh the first gate coming in from fort Bragg was closed if you drive up a bit more the second gate was open! Mostly dirt and gravel and a bit of mud but wasn’t too bad! It was my first time being on a trial like this so it was nice to start getting some experience fer sure! Good way to learn about my truck a lot more!

Took the road from Fort Bragg to Willits. Both gates were open ran into a gentleman that was grading the road said theoretically the road is not quite open yet, but I found no problems. Fun day drive not very technical at all a little overgrown, but not too bad

Easy trail. Took from Willits to fort bragg. Some muddy sections that are avoidable entering fort Bragg. Overall a nice easy scenic drive to the ocean. Recommend doing.

Coming from the West the first few miles are paved. Once on the dirt after a mile or so, there’s a closed gate.

Came to try and head into fort brag the back way from the east side. gate closed where it heads west, about 30 minutes north from town. unknown if it was the time (it was late) or if it closes winter.

fun day out on the trail with lots of mud and some fairly deep puddles. coming from willits, the last gate going into fort Bragg was closed. when we got there. we thought we were going to have to drive back the entire way to willits. but then we talked to the friendly, helpful, but slightly scary man. living in the woods about a half mile before the last gate and he told us it was unlocked. I guess he just keeps it closed to protect his camp.

Willits to Fort Bragg. Going this direction once you get on the dirt its fairly tame just VERY rough dirt and rock road till you get to the halfway point. We went right after a rain and I really regret not listening to previous reports on here. At about the half way mark the clay mud and ruts start to appear around almost every corner. The direction we went there is a very wet off camber uphill left that slid us into the bank on left side and got us stuck for a few minutes till we got traction boards out. Right after that there is a horribly rutted very steep very mushy tight uphill left that gave us some issues. We picked the wrong time in the end. Not recommended when wet. When you see the tweaker trailer and broken dodge the fun is either over or about to begin depending on direction of travel. In the end I feel like I just beat up the truck and did not enjoy much because mud and 1000ft cliffs isn’t very fun lol. Would not go out of my way to do again.

From Willits until about 6 miles from Ft Bragg the trail is easy. Some rough spots here and there. A stock Subi can do it. There was one spot closer to Ft Bragg that had some ruts to be negotiated but if you take it slow you’ll be fine. Saw two abandoned trucks that had been there awhile and one homeless camp but that was it. The trail didn’t feel unsafe at all. Lots of dispersed sites closer to Willits. Only saw one trash pile. You’re in the forest mostly but there are few view spots. I was in 2WD the whole time.
