Pit River Rim - FS 36N20

This 6+ mile out-and-back trail starts and ends on Pit Goose Valley, traveling through the Lassen National Forest amid lots of ponderosa pine trees, California black oak, manzanita, and other flora. The trail surface consists of hard-packed dirt that is dusty throughout the drive. The route runs along a shelf road, which gives you some views of the surrounding mountains through the trees, adding scenic interest despite the partial forest coverage. The trail maintains a width of 1 to 1.5 vehicles throughout most of its length. Numerous downed trees that have been cut and pushed aside require maneuvering around, and drivers must also navigate over one small log and branches along the route. Some low-hanging branches appear along the way as well, requiring awareness of vehicle height in these sections. At mile 2, the trail becomes more narrow, which can result in pinstripes from vegetation contact, though the trail opens back up again beyond this section. A good turnaround area exists at the end of the trail, providing convenient logistics for the out-and-back format.
