Trail Overview
Phillips Loop is an exciting moderate off-road trail in the Calico Mountains, perfect for high-clearance stock SUVs and drivers looking to explore historic mining country. Stretching approximately 4.6 miles with a maximum elevation of 2,834 feet, this scenic route takes adventurers through rugged desert terrain and colorful canyon washes. The journey begins near Mule Canyon Road, transitioning from relatively straightforward dirt tracks to more demanding surfaces as the path climbs. Along the route, drivers will experience a cumulative elevation gain of around 850 feet, navigating through a unique landscape of volcanic rock formations. One of the primary highlights of the loop is passing near Kramer Arch, a massive natural rock arch that offers an excellent scenic stop.
As the trail continues past the turn for Kramer Arch, the track transitions into a narrow, rocky shelf road that demands careful tire placement and steady technical driving. Remnants of asphalt from when the route was paved in the 1930s now form slick, broken obstacles that add a historical twist to the challenge. While high-clearance stock SUVs can complete the loop with an experienced driver, side trails branching off the main loop quickly escalate in difficulty, offering optional trials for highly modified rigs. This desert route is best tackled during the cooler fall, winter, and spring months when temperatures are manageable.
Difficulty
Moderate: Much of the road is fairly easy. A section of narrow, rocky shelf road after the turn for Kramer Arch is more challenging. Highclearance stock SUVs can get through with experienced driver. Side roads are more difficult.
History
Like Doran Scenic Drive, Phillips Loop was also paved back in the 1930s and was a popular tourist destination for about 10 years. Today, what little pavement remains only serves as an obstacle to make the drive more challenging.
