This 37.5-mile route transitions from an easy, scenic drive winding through pine forests and crossing several small creeks into a much more demanding, narrow one-lane track over long volcanic ridges. Drivers will tackle a cumulative elevation gain of over 5,260 feet, reaching a maximum elevation of 3,624 feet. The initial portion of the trail utilizes wide, well-maintained gravel roads before transitioning to rough, rocky terrain that requires high-clearance vehicles and careful wheel placement. Navigating the ridge lines presents tricky rocky sections and a steep incline that will test the traction and clearance of your four-wheel-drive vehicle. While the main route is suitable for high-clearance SUVs, SxSs, and capable off-road rigs, green-sticker vehicles are restricted to side roads only and are not permitted on the main Peligreen Jeepway route. Travelers can expect tight brush along segments like the Grapevine Jeepway, and should exercise caution as optional shortcuts along the trail may be difficult or entirely impassible due to fallen trees.
