Trail Overview

Trail starts with an easy scenic drive through pine trees as it crosses several small creeks. The real fun starts when the road becomes a rough narrow one-lane drive over long volcanic ridges. Scenic views throughout until you reach Ishi Road, where you once again reach wide gravel roads. Forest campgrounds along Hogsback Road plus dry camping. Green-sticker vehicles on side roads only, not main route shown here.

Difficulty

Moderate: Easy, wide gravel road then changes to rough rocky terrain after Wpt. 03. High-clearance SUV recommended. One steep incline and several rocky sections along ridge are tricky to navigate. Grapevine Jeepway can be tight with brush. Optional shortcut can be difficult to impassible due to numerous fallen trees.

Fun trail, recommend going early to make a day of it. Great views, creek access, many side trails. Started from the east end, once you trail half way it’s closed from 12-1 to 3-27. But it does run into option 4x4 trails. Great time in a SxS, nothing too crazy. Good way to get more comfortable with multiple off road conditions. I was in my ‘26 commander max xt-p with the family, and my buddy did it with his ‘24 mule fact 6 seater no problem. Pack food and make a day. Have fun with it and enjoy the views and some hiking. Has a little bit of everything from wide open road, rock areas, steeper grades, narrow paths, lava steps etc. like I said a little of everything but even if you aren’t super experienced, you’ll have fun and shouldn’t have much problems.

Inaccessible from Ponderosa Way due to the collapsed bridge. Enter from the north from Plum Cr Rd/Hogsback Rd. Narrow dry brush will pinstripe most vehicles.

Tight squeezes with 4x4 sure to be scratched with 3 inch long thorns on left and right side of vehicle simultaneously. Currently, not for shiny rigs.
