Trail Overview
Old Rail Rd (FS 1S13) is a 3-mile, point-to-point trail that drops over 530 feet from start to finish. The route starts on Highway 120 and ends at the junction of Sand Flat Cutoff and 120 Cutoff (FS 1S0). The trail is made of sand and pumice, roughly one vehicle wide, and lined with sagebrush and numerous pine trees. Occasional deeper sand patches and washboards make the ride interesting. The trail is very dusty, and views of the Eastern Sierra peaks and Mono Craters can be glimpsed through the trees. Seasonal fire restrictions apply.
Difficulty
This trail features ruts from heavy side-by-side use, some whoops, and washboards. Certain curves have deeper ruts with high median centers, which could challenge low-clearance vehicles. Overgrown branches and brush along the trail may impact taller or wider vehicles. Wildlife such as mule deer and coyotes may be present. 4x4 is not required but highly recommended in the deeper sand sections.
