Trail Overview

Little Green Valley Trail offers a solid off-road experience for intermediate drivers looking to explore the scenic backcountry of the San Bernardino National Forest without venturing into highly technical terrain. This moderate-rated route is ideal for 4x4s with decent clearance, providing a mix of mild challenges and rewarding mountain views. Running just north of Running Springs, the trail winds through the Arrowhead Ranger District on primarily dirt surfaces punctuated by rocky patches and weather-worn ruts. While it's approachable for most off-road-capable rigs, recent storms can carve out deeper washouts and make traction trickier, especially on inclines. The trail is typically open from late spring through early fall, but closures are common after snow or heavy rain, so always confirm status with the U.S. Forest Service before heading out. Shared use with hikers and mountain bikers is common, so stay alert, especially on narrow stretches. Cell service can be spotty, and sudden fog or snow at higher elevations may roll in fast, so prep accordingly. Pro tip: After a storm, scout rutted sections on foot before committing--some dips can swallow a tire quicker than you'd expect.

Difficulty

This trail is a manageable but engaging forest trail with a few sections that elevate it beyond beginner level. Difficulty can vary with the weather and seasonal growth. Key challenges include: - Steep initial climb requiring traction and throttle control - Rutted sections from runoff and use - Small creek crossings that may deepen after storms or snowmelt - Off-camber portions requiring careful line choice - Shelf-road segments with narrower trail width - Spring-fed technical section that can become slick or uneven - Overgrown vegetation that may narrow the trail seasonally Suitable for most high-clearance AWD/4WD vehicles in dry conditions. After storms, snow, or spring runoff, expect more difficulty. Pro Tips: - Best enjoyed in spring through fall, depending on snow levels - Check for seasonal closures before departure - Vegetation may cause pin-striping in summer - Bring recovery gear if recent storms created mud or washouts - Watch for hikers and mountain bikers - Sunset near the top can be excellent for photos
