Trail Overview
Liebre Mountain is a scenic, introductory-level off-road route traversing the high ridges of the Angeles National Forest, offering stunning vistas of the Antelope Valley and Mojave Desert to the north. Stretching roughly 18 miles along Forest Road 7N23, this trail is ideal for beginner off-roaders and stock SUV owners seeking a panoramic ridge-line drive without intense technical obstacles. The trail climbs from an elevation of approximately 3,950 feet to a high point near 5,770 feet, tracking close to Liebre Mountain and Sawmill Mountain summits. Along the way, the path navigates a mix of dirt and gravel surfaces, occasionally narrowing to a single lane with mild climbs and gentle, sweeping descents that are highly manageable.
While generally rated a mild 3 out of 10, the route can present slick, muddy conditions during the wet season, making four-wheel drive highly recommended. High-elevation winter storms occasionally blanket the ridge in snow, which can dramatically change the difficulty and lead to seasonal closures by the Forest Service. Visitors will weave through unique stands of native oak and transitioning pine forests, with plenty of spots to pull off and take in the expansive views of the surrounding Sierra Pelona Mountains. Accessing the trailhead is straightforward, starting from the historic Old Ridge Route on the western end or Pine Canyon Road on the eastern end, making it a perfect weekend day-trip option within easy reach of the Los Angeles and Santa Clarita metro areas.
