Trail Overview
Kidd Creek - FS 2N86 is a short, scenic forest route winding through dense pine stands in the Big Bear backcountry just south of Big Bear Lake and near Bluff Lake. The trail offers a relaxed drive overall, with a mix of smooth dirt, light rock, and a few uneven sections that keep it interesting. Along the way, you’ll encounter a small creek crossing, mild off-camber sections, and access to several notable spots, including Yellow Post Site 30, Bluff Mesa Group Campground, and the Castle Rock hiking trail corridor. This trail works best as a connector route or a laid-back cruise rather than a destination trail.
Difficulty
This trail is mostly mellow and beginner-friendly, making it a great option for building confidence off-road. Off-camber sections may feel uncomfortable for newer drivers but are generally manageable, while a few short rocky or rutted spots require basic line choice. The creek crossing is typically shallow, though water levels can vary seasonally. Conditions become more difficult after rain or snow due to mud and reduced traction, and higher water levels at the creek crossing can also increase the challenge. Overall, the route offers just enough variation to stay engaging without being overly demanding.
History
Kids Creek (FS 2N86) is part of the San Bernardino National Forest’s extensive OHV and forest road system, originally developed for forest management, fire access, and logging operations. Over time, it has become a multi-use access route, connecting recreation areas, campgrounds, and hiking trails. Today, it serves as a low-impact entry point for off-roaders looking to explore the Big Bear backcountry without tackling more technical terrain.
