Trail Overview
This is a spectacular, short (1-mile) spur trail that begins on a sandy forest road before hitting a severely rocky and steep final descent to the scenic Iron Lakes basin. The route culminates in the final "Rated 5" section, a boulder-strewn slope of large, loose rocks that leads to the lake's single dispersed campsite and stunning exposed views of the sub-alpine environment.
Difficulty
This trail features tight tree sections that can be challenging for full-sized vehicles, along with a rock garden and multiple rock ledges that require four-wheel drive. It offers a moderate technical challenge suited for experienced drivers.
History
The trail's rugged nature hints at its past purpose; the route likely began as a basic path for logging or mineral exploration to access the high country. The area, including the prominent Iron Mountain, is named for the presence of iron ore in the surrounding peaks. This route now serves as a modern adventure challenge leading into the adjacent Ansel Adams Wilderness.
