Trail Overview

This is a 5.2 mile long singletrack in the Tahoe National Forest with incredible views and tons of technical rock features. The south end starts at the Packer Lake Saddle, with space for a few vehicles to park. From the south end, it curves around the edge of the open hillside with an incredible view overlooking the mountains and Packer Lake. The trail is narrow and shelfy in the beginning, with a few tight switchbacks, and a couple really scenic viewpoints after it weaves through the trees. There are frequent embedded rock features all throughout the route. This includes boulders lining the trail, moderate ledges, ramped boulder faces, and lots of loose rock. After crossing FS 93-001, it gets more twisty, with really tight turns over all the rock features. In the northern half of the trail you'll find some bigger rock ledges, tight maneuvering between the boulders, and long smooth layers of bedrock that you ride over. The ledges are sharp looking jagged bedrock layers that create multiple stair steps. It's overall a really fun one for more experienced riders, in epic high alpine terrain. You also get some views of the Sierra Buttes lookout tower on the south end. This trail is closed 1/1 - 3/31.

Difficulty

Overall this trail is better suited to more experienced riders as there are frequent rock obstacles all throughout the route that are technical. The switchbacks and shelfy segments also add to the difficulty.

Access Description

The moto trails in the Tahoe National Forest northeast of Downieville, California are best accessed from the Packer Lake Saddle or Sierra Buttes Trailhead on Gold Valley Road. It's a steep paved road with a couple dirt parking lots, not ideal for large trailers. Parking is tricky in the town of Downieville with no official staging area, so it's best accessed from the east side of the trail system. These trails are highly popular with mountain bikers as well.
