Trail Overview
Giant Hyssop (FS 6S026X) is the perfect escape hatch when you tire of the pavement on Beasore Road (FS 5S07). This trail offers an immediate transition from tarmac to a classic Sierra two-track adventure, peeling off into the forest for a steady climb toward the clouds. While technically an easy drive, it keeps you awake with a surface that is a playful mix of minor ruts and sections of embedded rock, just enough to remind your suspension that it has a job to do. As you climb away from the main road, the route serves as a corridor to some fantastic outdoor real estate, passing several cozy dispersed campsites tucked into the trees. But the real prize awaits those who push to the very end: a spectacular high-elevation group camping area perched among the granite rocks at approximately 7,300 feet. Here, the trees part to reveal sweeping regional views, making it an epic spot to circle the rigs and watch the sunset over the mountains. It’s a rewarding climb that offers maximum views for minimal technical effort.
Difficulty
This trail earns a Rating 2 because it moves beyond a maintained gravel road into true unmaintained two-track territory. Drivers should expect uneven surfaces, including embedded rocks and minor ruts that require a bit of attention to wheel placement. While 4WD is not strictly necessary for traction in dry conditions, high ground clearance is strongly recommended to navigate the rocky sections comfortably without scraping the undercarriage. It is an accessible adventure for stock SUVs and trucks, but low-slung passenger cars should probably stay on the pavement to avoid damage.
