Trail Overview

This is a fantastic family adventure. The entire trail is located inside Joshua Tree National Park. It is a long loop trail that is very scenic with beautiful vistas, interesting rock formations, ancient volcanic lava flows, and Joshua Trees. The loop portion of the trail is one-way (clockwise).

Besides it being hot asballs, the trail was very easy and straightforward with there only being a few sections near the end that have some deep ruts but it’s nice they give you an alternative to pick an easier line. Not technical at all, and the initial drive you can almost treat it like Baja, the path is packed and is fun to give it small rips.

Rough road but easily passable by most if the front wheel drive Ram van I pass is anything to go by. one big mud hole still drying out but it is flagged so you don’t go in it.

Great trail when visiting the park. A couple of weeks after recent rains but only one large mud hole with tracks from others. Only time had to go into low 4WD. Easy trail #1 as noted. Download guide to note markers / infomation (National Park Services)

First part had some shallow puddles from the recent rainstorm. Be aware of deep (2-3 foot) mud pits at the one way portion of the route. Water was up over the hood when my Jeep pitched sideways in the mud pit. Nearly stuck in the last puddle but 4wd and momentum barely got us through! I’d recommend avoiding that portion of the loop until it dries out more

Although there are signs saying the trail is closed, it's open and passable. Some nice deep muddy ruts in one portion, but easy enough to get through if you choose a line that is not in someone else's rut.

Road was open. A super duty was stuck in a mud pit on the one way road and blocked it. The truck was too heavy and we couldn’t yank it out. They already called tow truck so we turned around. The mud pit is avoidable. Can’t tell the road conditions afterwards

There is no dispersed camping anywhere in Joshua Tree Park, period. We were headed to Geology Trail & the ranger said the road is closed. If you disperse camp, you will be told to leave....

The out and back section was easy, some washboard but not bad. On the loop section there are 4 big mud holes, one was about 1.5 feet deep but all are passable in high clearance 4x4.

Road to loop trail is mostly washboard with sandy patches. Seen passenger cars on this section. The loop trail has sharp rocks; some that are hidden in sandy sections. Well maintained overall with great views. Areas to pull out and take in the view on one way loop. Aired down for comfort.
