Trail Overview

This narrow, fine-dirt trail climbs through a scenic section of forest with little room for vehicles to pass. Near the beginning, expect 12–14-inch ruts while climbing the hillside. The fine dirt can become significantly more difficult when wet. Around 1 mile, a level, shaded campsite offers a fire ring and plenty of protection from the surrounding trees. The trail is van-friendly but not trailer-friendly, with 4WD or AWD highly recommended.

Difficulty

This trail is rated Level 3 because of the 12–14-inch ruts combined with the hill climb and fine, loose dirt. 4WD or AWD is highly recommended, particularly when traction is limited.

History

Inyo National Forest was established in 1907 and today protects a vast section of the Eastern Sierra surrounding Mammoth Lakes. The area has a long history of Native American use, mining, ranching, and recreation, while volcanic activity, glaciers, and the uplift of the Sierra Nevada shaped its dramatic landscape.
