Trail Overview
This short trail begins directly off the paved road with a very steep hill climb over extremely soft dirt. 4WD or AWD is required due to the combination of the steep grade and loose surface, regardless of which direction the route is traveled.
Around 0.4 miles, several flat, level campsites are located along the trail. The route also provides access to numerous neighboring trails with additional camping opportunities. This trail is not van- or trailer-friendly.
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 3 because of the very steep hill climb combined with extremely soft dirt and limited traction. 4WD or AWD is required in either direction, and the route is not recommended for vans or trailers.
History
Inyo National Forest was established in 1907 and today protects a vast section of the Eastern Sierra surrounding Mammoth Lakes. The area has a long history of Native American use, mining, ranching, and recreation, while volcanic activity, glaciers, and the uplift of the Sierra Nevada shaped its dramatic landscape.
