Trail Overview
This fine-dirt trail offers expansive views of Grant Lake and the surrounding mountain range throughout the route. Overgrown vegetation is common, but the trail is generally wide enough to avoid pinstriping with careful driving. Camping is plentiful, with more than eight campsites scattered along the trail. Sites begin within the first 50 yards, with additional options around 0.3 and 0.4 miles. Each campsite accommodates only one vehicle but offers level ground and excellent views of Grant Lake and the mountains. While the trail itself is trailer-friendly, none of the campsites are large enough to accommodate a trailer. The fine dirt can become considerably more difficult when wet.
History
Inyo National Forest was established in 1907 and today protects a vast section of the Eastern Sierra surrounding Mammoth Lakes. The area has a long history of Native American use, mining, ranching, and recreation, while its dramatic landscape was shaped by volcanic activity, glaciers, and the uplift of the Sierra Nevada.
