Trail Overview

This narrow, fine-dirt trail weaves through forested hills with ruts reaching 6–8 inches deep. Frequent whoops reach 18–24 inches tall, which may create clearance issues for trailers and very long-wheelbase vehicles. Camping is plentiful throughout the route, with numerous level campsites offering plenty of shade beneath the tall trees. The fine-dirt surface can become considerably more difficult when wet.

Difficulty

This trail is rated Level 2 because of the 6–8-inch ruts and frequent 18–24-inch whoops. Longer-wheelbase vehicles and trailers may have difficulty clearing the larger whoops.

History

Inyo National Forest was established in 1907 and today protects a vast section of the Eastern Sierra surrounding Mammoth Lakes. The area has a long history of Native American use, mining, ranching, and recreation, while its dramatic landscape was shaped by volcanic activity, glaciers, and the uplift of the Sierra Nevada.
