Trail Overview

Deer Lake Road - FS 93-001, conveniently accessed directly from Packer Saddle. This highly scenic, 1.2-mile journey begins as a delightfully smooth, packed-dirt track winding beautifully through a magnificent, dense alpine forest of towering, moss-draped pines. During this peaceful early stretch, you will pass by several spacious and inviting dispersed campsites tucked just off the main path on flat dirt clearings, offering perfect, shaded spots to pull over, set up camp, and relax. However, as you progress past the one-mile mark, the trail's character shifts noticeably. The previously smooth dirt gives way to much steeper inclines heavily peppered with scattered loose stones and chunky, protruding embedded rocks. The drive ultimately culminates in a final, noticeably steep climb that demands careful attention and precise tire placement to navigate cleanly.

Difficulty

While the first mile is a wonderfully gentle and pleasant drive on relatively smooth dirt that feels like a level one, the final sections introduce deeper, steeper climbs and a significant amount of protruding, embedded rock. Navigating this trail with lower ground clearance is entirely possible, but it will undoubtedly be a bumpy, uncomfortable ride that requires highly focused steering. To conquer the final steep ascent safely, simply keep your speed very low, stay patient, and carefully guide your tires over the chunky obstacles to protect your undercarriage from potential scrapes.
