Trail Overview
This 3-mile out-and-back trail starts on Highway 22 just across from Ella Wash and heads into the hills, winding between the mud hills as it gains elevation. The sand is very fine with some sections that are deep, requiring constant momentum management. The trail gets narrower as you climb into the hills, creating increasingly tight quarters. Eventually, you have to stop as it narrows too much for vehicles, though you can continue on foot to explore further into the canyon. The wash is lined by many different types of desert brush that frame your journey through this scenic canyon environment.
Difficulty
The very fine sand with deep sections requires four wheel drive, and airing down is essential for maintaining traction in the soft, deep sand. The trail getting more narrow as you climb demands careful navigation and may be challenging for wider vehicles. The climb into the hills with narrowing terrain creates difficulty that increases as you progress. Know when to turn around before the trail becomes impassable for your vehicle's width.
