Trail Overview

Chocolate Thunder is an legendary, ultra-short rock crawling canyon in Johnson Valley, California, designed specifically for highly modified four-wheel-drive vehicles and built rock crawlers looking to test their limits. Measuring just under 600 feet in length with a steep elevation gain of about 120 feet, this short but extreme route climbs from 2,793 feet to 2,912 feet through a narrow, boulder-choked ravine. The trail is famous for its festive spectator atmosphere, especially during the annual King of the Hammers event, where crowds gather to watch rigs attempt the intense obstacles. The main route presents drivers with a choice between two formidable lines that demand high ground clearance, locked differentials, and large off-road tires. Taking the left line forces vehicles onto a tippy slab rock that easily high-centers unprepared rigs, requiring precise tire placement and an experienced spotter to navigate safely. The right-hand option presents a massive vertical step-up obstacle that regularly puts rigs on their roofs if they lack the appropriate wheelbase or lose momentum. Because of the extreme rollover risk, a winch, recovery gear, and a solid roll cage are mandatory safety equipment for any attempt. The terrain consists entirely of massive, loose boulders and slickrock, which offers challenging traction even for built SxSs and dedicated truggies. The trail is accessible year-round, though extreme summer heat makes late fall through early spring the ideal season for tackling this legendary Johnson Valley gauntlet.
