Trail Overview
BLM SV2674 travels over fine, loose sand that can become more difficult when wet. The trail is narrow with some overgrown vegetation, although pinstriping is generally avoidable. Rock gardens are common, with rocks reaching 7 inches in diameter. Around 1.5 miles, the terrain becomes rockier with larger 6–10 inch rocks. The route travels through a scenic section of BLM land with expansive views of Sawtooth Canyon, surrounding hills, mountains, and rugged rock formations.
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 2 because of its loose, sandy surface, narrow sections, and frequent rock gardens with rocks reaching 6–10 inches. The obstacles require careful driving but remain relatively mild.
History
The BLM lands around Sawtooth Canyon reflect the long history of California’s Mojave Desert, where Indigenous peoples traveled and lived for thousands of years before miners, ranchers, and settlers arrived in the 1800s. The surrounding desert also contains remnants of the region’s mining and homesteading era, while its rugged volcanic rock formations preserve a much older geologic history.
