Trail Overview
This sandy trail cuts through a sand dune with lots of sand hills creating an undulating dune environment. There is very little vegetation throughout, giving you an open, unobstructed view of the dune landscape. The trail travels east to west with many side spurs that come in and out of the trail which can get confusing at times, making navigation challenging in the uniform dune terrain. The lack of landmarks and numerous intersecting tracks mean you need to pay attention to maintain your intended route. This is in the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Open Riding Area, the largest in California, where registered OHV and highway legal vehicles are allowed.
Difficulty
The sandy dune terrain with lots of sand hills requires four wheel drive and airing down is essential for maintaining traction and momentum over the soft sand and elevation changes. The many side spurs creating confusing navigation adds difficulty beyond just the sand. The lack of vegetation and landmarks makes it easy to get disoriented. Proper navigation skills and awareness are important in this dune environment.
