Trail Overview

A 13.7 mile route through stunning Joshua Tree forest on a sand track that will take you by the remnants of an old cattle claim and the site of the famous pop culture icon - The Mojave Phone Booth (no longer there). The route route will also take you by an old corral and terminate at the site of old water tank #3. This is where it joins EMHT Segment 2 which you can then follow up into the Aiken Mine complex and to the Lava Tubes with an exit onto Kelbaker Rd.

Difficulty

This trail is relatively easy, though the sand can be VERY soft and deep at times (typically hotter drier months). Airing down in advance and understanding how to read and drive sand can be very useful through here. As you get closer to Aiken Mine, the terrain will turn to hard pack and then sharp lava rock - so mind your sidewalls.

From Kelbaker turned left onto Aiken mine. Washboard until parking lot for the lava tube cave tourist spot. Parking lot starts the 4-5 difficulty if you don’t have the right truck. rutted and rocky with sharp lava rocks - be careful. Turns to soft sand eventually and is super easy all the way out to the 15 staying on Aiken mill. This was about 20 miles from Kelbaker to the 15 with a super cool lava tube cave!

Easy going after leaving Johnson valley. No major obstacles, gorgeous sunset if you arrive at the right time. Moved on, I did see a few spots to camp along the way.
