Trail Overview
Gato Tank is an enticing trail that begins as a wider, twisty route, inviting you to explore its path while navigating through areas abundant with jumping cacti. Initially composed of dirt with some gravel, this section offers a smooth and enjoyable drive as you meander through the desert landscape. As you progress, you'll encounter a couple of offshoots leading to small campsites nestled toward the beginning of the trail. The journey includes crossings of several sandy washes, adding to the adventure. As you approach Gato Tank, the terrain shifts to predominantly sandy conditions--though the sand is not particularly deep, it may still require some attention to maintain your path. This trail is lined with stunning large saguaro cacti, creating a picturesque backdrop along your drive. The endpoint at Gato Tank is a treat;be sure to hike up to the edge for a lovely view of the surrounding area. Near the tank, you'll also find a large cattle holding area showcasing the agricultural aspect of this desert environment and a wildlife watering tank encountered earlier on the trail, designed to support local game. It's important to note that camping is prohibited within a quarter mile of Gato Tank, given its location on state trust land. Additionally, keep in mind that some sections of the trail can become muddy when wet, especially after rains. Important Note: Before heading out on Gato Tank Trail, ensure you're prepared for desert conditions by bringing enough water and supplies. Also, don't forget to purchase online and print out your Arizona State Land Trust permit for legal access to the area.
