Trail Overview

Centre Road is the main backcountry access route in Moose Mountain Provincial Park, cutting through the heart of nearly 100,000 acres of forest, lakes, and rolling uplands. Historically, one of the few corridors carved through the thick bush, it remains the primary road that leads into the park’s rugged interior. Today, it serves as a summer backcountry drive for 4x4s and ATVs, with numerous side trails branching off toward lakes and meadows. The road itself is unmaintained with a minimal-to-no gravel base, so conditions vary greatly: dry stretches may be firm and sandy, while low spots can hold water or turn into deep ruts after rain. The Province/Park asks that drivers stay off the route when it is soft and muddy to avoid damaging it, even though splashing through might seem tempting. Drivers should also use caution on blind corners and hills, as ATVs often share the road, and expect to encounter free-range cattle in summer and hunters in fall. Wildlife sightings are common, with deer, elk, moose, and waterfowl frequently appearing along the way. Cell coverage is spotty, so it’s best to come prepared with recovery gear. In winter, Centre Road is closed to wheeled traffic and transformed into part of the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association’s groomed network. No matter the season, Centre Road is the backbone of the Moose Mountain backcountry and the starting point for exploring one of Saskatchewan’s most surprising upland landscapes.ATVs are only allowed on the western portion of the trail. A Provincial Park pass is required.
