Beginner Off-Road Trails

Trail 2 is a series of loops spread out over a decent-sized area. The trails are stock vehicle-friendly but have some spots that will need caution. Expect small rocks, hills, twists, and tight turns. There is a nice view at certain times of the year.

Trail 1 goes north and south of the main road. To get to the Portal Trail, you will take trail 1 to the north. Taking 1 to the south will lead you up a rocky hill to access many trails on that side of the coal road. To the north, it passes the office and the campground heading along other trails.

Trail 3 starts in the valley with a series of looped sections. Then it goes down to the Big Mountain area, working its way through some old mining areas. Add in the Tunnel of Love section up to the top of the hill and work your way to trail 6. It has some small rocks but nothing crazy.

This trail is a connector between trail 104 and the main ATV trail. It is a nice section that has a gradual elevation change. There are no real obstacles; it's just a nice winding trail from one section to the other. There is a transition from a field to a wooded area with puddles and small rocks.

Trail 5 is a network of trails in an area behind the office and off of trail 1. There is a nice mix of terrain and difficulty on these trails. Most are small rocky trails with a little bit of an elevation change. There are some steeper sections with rockier paths.

The entrance to the campground starts on the left-hand side of the entrance road to the AOAA. There is a large sign at the start of the road. It is a dirt road that goes downhill and makes a loop around the sites.

Nice scenic loop that will eventually be a full trail. For now, it is a tight loop that is drivable by anything except large vehicles. Enjoy nice pine tree cover, perfect for lunch breaks and pit stops while working your way across the western reserve. Be cautious of some of the narrow paths.

Trail 9 is a long trail with multiple sections. It is a green trail and is a stock-friendly trail. It has elevation changes, small rocks, puddles, and a nice mix of open and wooded areas. This is also a great way to get from one end to the other on the east side.

This is an ATV section that connects trail 3 Blue and trail 7. There are small simple obstacles along the way but the most difficult section of this is at trail 7. There is an off-camber hill with a turn. It is not difficult for a seasoned rider but for a beginner, it could be scary.
