Description
The Fahnestock Trail is a through trail but often is done in sections as part of different loop hikes. The west trailhead starts to the right of Hubbard Lodge on Campbell Road. This initial section shares the path with School Mountain Road Trail. The Fahnestock Trail is marked with blue discs. When you reach a stream crossing, the Fahnestock Trail splits off from the School Mountain Road Trail to the right and travels back in the direction you just traveled on the other side of a creek. When the trail moves away from the creek, the terrain becomes very steep until you reach the top of Round Hill and a few nice viewpoints. The trail descends a ridge and after about 3.5 miles you reach a trail junction with the Perkins Trail. The Perkins Trail is marked with yellow discs and shares the same path with the Fahnestock Trail for about .5 miles. At that point the trails separate and the Fahnestock Trail travels along Clove Creek Pond. After passing the pond, the trail takes a turn right and you'll pass the Clove Creek Trail on the left. Continue straight until you reach the Charcoal Burners Trail marked with red discs. The two trail again share the same path until you pass Beaver Pond. Fahnestock breaks off to the left and follow until the trail ends on the Appalachian Trail. If taking this trail east to west, you have to park on Route 301 south of Canopus Lake and follow the Appalachian Trail to a steep staircase. You'll see a large cairn on the left with blue spray paint. Turn left here onto the Fahnestock Trail.
