Description
Spirit Arch Canyon is located in the northern section of San Rafael Swell (north of U.S. 70). The trailhead is at the mouth of a dry wash in a shaded spot, which is a rare amenity in this area. The trail will gradually round a corner and enter another wash. Cross the wash and ascend a steep hill with the wash on your right. The trail traverses above the wash until it makes a right turn back across the drainage. Soon the wash forks into two canyons, and these are the two destinations to visit. To see Spirit Arch first, stay right and follow the path into a box canyon. High on the left side of the canyon wall is a small arch that looks more like a sliver, and another larger oval arch just below it. They are small and can easily be missed. The canyon is also referred to as Double Arch Canyon. To see the petroglyphs next, return to the mouth of this canyon, then turn to head up the other fork of the wash into another narrow canyon. You'll not have to travel far into this canyon. Look to the right for the manganese stained sandstone wall, the petroglyphs are located here. It's possible to explore farther up this canyon to explore some rock alcoves, but when you are satisfied you can simply return the way you came.
