Description
The area that Pine Canyon Trail passes through was a gravel quarry after World War II, used in the construction of Highway 71 that passes along the southern border of the park. The soils over which the trail traverses are a beautiful combination of rusty reds, tans, and cream, and the spotty appearance of the soils makes the 20 foot bluffs look like a paint horse or a calico cat. The trail loops around a small pond that is often home to an abundance of dragonflies.
