The ascent is difficult and trekking poles and shoes with good grip are recommended. There are some small creek crossings but not big enough to get your feet wet.
About 3 miles in, you can take a turn off to the right for a trail up to Livingston Peak summit. The last 0.4 miles of the trail is very difficult, gaining about 1,000 feet in elevation.
