Description
The South Fork Deep Creek Trail begins at the Deep Creek trailhead and follows the creek into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. The route climbs gradually at first, then steepens through thick forest. After a short distance, the canopy opens to scattered meadows with expanding views of Mount Delano and Mount McKnight. These prominent landmarks rise above the valley to the north and south. The trail continues upstream along the north side of the drainage, crossing several small tributaries and passing through a mix of shaded forest and open benches as it winds deeper into remote terrain. Water is available throughout from the creek and side streams, but all sources should be filtered. This is active grizzly bear habitat, so carry bear spray and follow recommended food storage practices. No permit is required for day use however, overnight visitors may need to complete a free self-issue form at the trailhead. With its moderate to strenuous climbing, relative solitude, and striking views of Absaroka peaks, this trail offers a rewarding route into one of the quieter drainages near Paradise Valley. Return to the trailhead the same way, or extended backcountry opportunities can be achieved by dropping over into the Davis Creek drainage.
